There are 2 things at play here: one is Bond's duty towards his mission and his agency which won't allow him to settle down. If you fall in love and live happily ever after as everything goes smoothly, that doesn't make a very compelling story. They are both attractive people and Vesper's charming personality along with her display of humanity (her scene in the shower cabin washing off the blood contrasted with Bond's display of zero emotion despite having killed a guy moments earlier) makes Bond fall for her over time.Ģ) Tension. Both Bond and Vesper have to act as if they are a couple in love and together go through a tense few days in the villain's den at the casino. There are 3 things a good love story requires imho:ġ) The reason the characters fall in love. I am talking about the relationship between Bond and Vesper in Casino Royale (2006). One of my favorite love stories in a franchise film comes from James Bond surprisingly.
The franchise films today do have love stories, but mostly in the background. You don't get epic romances supported by big budgets these days. SPOILERS BELOW FOR CASINO ROYALE AND QUANTUM OF SOLACE:
